After several decades, the elliptical wooden dome of the Curno Shopping Centre was in need of renovation. The particular shape that made this project so special was adapted from the previous model: the installation of the dome, measuring approximately 30 x 50 metres, required thorough planning in view of the imminent opening of the shopping centre. The dome nowadays forms a distinctive element of the Curno Shopping Centre.
“The elliptical shape of the dome meant that the biggest challenges were water regulation in order to reduce the maintenance tasks and infiltration risks to zero, and the tight deadline owing to the imminent opening of the retail outlets in the new shopping centre. The excellent cooperation between our installers and the technicians allowed us to resolve these issues.”
Daniele Bettineschi, Rubner
We at Rubner were tasked with the production, supply and installation of the glulam roof structure and the four canopies on the outside of the shopping centre. The elliptical roof consists of three-hinged beams with paired rafters. Rubner was also involved in the installation of the windows and doors. Two window types were used, including planar and shed rooflights. The elliptical dome, measuring some 1,500 m², had to be assembled in two stages, which meant moving the self-erecting crane. We installed the supporting structure and the four canopies in just four months. The work was completed in the year 2020.
