The innovative new sports hall for 1,700 pupils at the Kepler and Humboldt grammar schools presents a creative solution for the limited inner-city location and building space: three single-court gymnasiums stacked on top of each other, each measuring 27 x 15 metres with a ceiling height of 5.8 metres. Half of the lowest hall is below ground level.
As Rubner Ingenieurholzbau, we were responsible for the factory planning, production, logistics and assembly of the timber and glass façades, including sun protection systems. The 660 m² mullion-transom façade made of glulam with Raico glazing system was prefabricated at the Ober-Grafendorf plant, enabling efficient assembly on site.
Bright colours instead of muted tones characterise the façade structure of vertically structured, white aluminium slats. These emphasise the solitary position of the hall and strengthen its identity. Depending on the viewing angle, the twisted louvres create a dynamic look and allow targeted insights into the interior.
A unique staircase sculpture in the cross-storey air space leads users to the changing rooms and upper hall areas.
