The seven-section school for more than 1,700 students and 120 teachers was built using sustainable timber construction methods. The school building features a simple and functional basic structure. In the L-shaped complex, the sports area and cafeteria are clearly separated from the administrative area, classrooms, and specialized rooms.
The classroom wings, organized as clusters in “step houses,” are directly accessible from the outdoor area via covered walkways. Wherever building and fire safety regulations allowed, wood was chosen as the primary and finishing construction material.
The design concept of Cologne architect Prof. Gernot Schulz and landscape architect Johannes Böttger:
“The easy accessibility of all locations via the shortest and simplest routes, along with the contact with the openness, spaciousness, and diversity of the surrounding landscape, should shape school life in the new building.”
Our services included the detailed planning and execution of the structural timber construction for the four step houses and their connecting structure. Over 1,000 m³ of glulam was used in the load-bearing timber skeleton structure made up of columns and beams. This, combined with 6,420 m² of cross-laminated timber ceilings in a timber-concrete composite system, forms the framework. A maximum of 3,240 m² of prefabricated exterior wall elements with on-site installed windows, doors, and sun protection, along with a ventilated facade made of fiber-reinforced concrete, complete the building envelope. Additionally, our scope included the installation of approximately 4,500 m² of precast concrete components for the covered walkways.
Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication, the main assembly was completed within eight months. The timber construction creates a warm, pleasant learning atmosphere.
