Originally built in the 1960s and last expanded in the 1980s, the secondary school on Baumgartenstraße in Holzkirchen was no longer able to meet today’s requirements in many respects. After a feasibility study, it was ultimately decided that the building should be demolished and rebuilt: Rubner Ingenieurholzbau was commissioned with the construction of the building envelope. The architecture of the project was handled by the office karlundp from Munich, while the structural planning was provided by Mathes Beratende Ingenieure from Chemnitz.

While the students attended classes in a temporary school, a modern secondary school building was constructed with a usable area of 4,000 m². Its compact volume and positioning within the urban context make the new secondary school a link between residential buildings and public structures: In combination with the adjacent existing elementary school and a pre-existing gymnasium, a school campus was created that harmoniously unites old and new.
The secondary school was built as an ensemble of three building units with up to four stories using hybrid construction methods: the structural framework made of reinforced concrete was completed with 2,430 m² of prefabricated wooden panel walls made of white fir – the exterior wall elements already included all windows, solar shading, outer board cladding, window reveals inside and outside, and a closed surface on the room side for further finishing by drywall construction.
Rubner also supplied and installed 2,470 m² of facade cladding in white fir and 568 m² of wood-aluminum windows. This was preceded by the construction, workshop planning, and manufacturing of the building components. Due to the high degree of prefabrication, the actual assembly time can be reduced to just a few weeks.
The new secondary school on Baumgartenstraße was able to open in time for the start of the 2025/2026 school year, providing the approximately 18 classes of children with space for both learning and discovery as well as for movement and retreat. The school is clearly organized into functional areas – communal spaces, administrative and educator areas, all-day school, specialized classrooms, and three learning apartments – all of which are interconnected with visual connections and are part of a generously designed overall space.
