Rubner, in collaboration with the Bear Stadiums consulting and design studio, developed and built the world’s first stadium made entirely of glulam, all in just five months. The Westhills Stadium in Langford is modular, environmentally friendly, comfortable and entirely “green”. It can seat around 5,500 spectators, divided between the main stand with its 18 skyboxes, kiosks and services, and the west stand, while the north side houses a beer garden for fans and families.
“The stadium’s distinctive design and sustainable features make a natural extension to the attractiveness of the City of Langford.”
Jaime Manca, architect, Villahermosa
For this project, we were responsible for the construction plans and the delivery of all glulam elements. The stadium aroused the interest of various football associations both in Italy and abroad – from the Caribbean to Qatar, from Mexico and China – who want to focus more on sustainability in the future and participate in the UN’s Climate Neutral Now initiative.
Unlike concrete or metal, a glulam construction model can significantly reduce:
- greenhouse gas emissions, and
- energy consumption.
In addition, their lightness ensures that glulam constructions integrate well into the landscape.
The project was completed in 2020.
Westhills Stadium was mentioned as a best practice example in FIFA’s new sustainability guidelines in early 2023.
As the first sustainable stadium in the world, built entirely from glulam, we are happy to make an important contribution to “green” sports.
