Four pavilions
for EXPO Dubai
Inspiration from all over the world
Location:
Dubai
Dimensions:
1,500 m³ of glued laminated timber and Cross laminated timber panels and 130 m³ of NORDPAN-3s panels
We were asked to design and build four exhibition pavilions for EXPO 2020 in Dubai. Each pavilion was to tell a different story: The first was inspired by Stephen Hawking and his thoughts on how humanity would express itself to an extra-terrestrial civilisation. The second was about how to meet humanity’s energy needs. The third was intended as a “gift to the world” and the fourth pavilion, with its leaf-shaped roof, drew inspiration from nature.
“The job proved a complex challenge, both in commercial and in execution and project planning terms, as the designs required a consultation process of several months.”
Stefano Sieni, engineer, Rubner
For this project, Rubner was commissioned with the:
- execution planning,
- production,
- transportation, and
- on-site assembly.
The construction of the four pavilions used 1,500 m³ of glulam and cross laminated timber panels as well as 130 m³ of NORDPAN-3s panels. For the Stephen Hawking pavilion we were responsible for the construction plans of the structural design, structural prefabrication, transport and assembly of 165 boxes with a structure consisting of glulam, cross laminated timbe and steel.
The project was completed in 2021.
