The sports stadium in Tortona will become the new home stadium for the local basketball team Derthona Basket, which currently plays in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A. Completed at the beginning of 2025, the “Lions” stadium is set to give the local basketball scene a new momentum. With 17,000 m², the building offers space for up to 5,000 spectators. The stadium roof, with a diameter of around 80 m, is made entirely of glulam, with the total weight of the elements amounting to over 70 tons.
The roof construction was originally planned to be made of steel, but glulam was chosen as the material for the construction of the new stadium roof due to the large spans of up to 33 meters, the excellent fire resistance (in this case R60), the structural requirements and the short construction times.
Our services included the structural and execution planning as well as the execution on a ready-to-use basis – including planning of the supporting structure, the entire roofing and all details.
We were also responsible for the production of all elements, such as glulam beams and prefabricated roof elements, as well as their delivery to the construction site, for which standard, special and customized vehicles were used. The assembly of the 185 elements for the roof covering (2.5 x 11.5 meters) was completed in around 6 weeks.
