There is no standard lifespan for a solid wood panel. This simply depends on far too many factors (climate, weather conditions, type of application, and much more). However, with correct use and care, it is safe to say that Nordpan solid wood panels have a very long lifespan. In interior fittings, for example, this can easily be several hundred years.
Yes, Nordpan solid wood panels can also be cut to size at our factory. To receive a specific quote, simply send us a brief enquiry with your requirements. Please note, however, that Nordpan does not have a precision saw. The machine is only suitable for standard sizing (tolerance +/- 2 mm) and can only cut at right angles.
This is a very important question, particularly when it comes to the use of wood panels in areas where there is contact with food. Nordpan’s single-layer and multi-layer solid wood panels are not specifically designed for contact with food. Whether a wood panel is permitted to come into contact with food depends on several factors:
1. Food safety: Materials intended for contact with food must be food-safe. This means they must not release any harmful substances that could be transferred to food.
2. Coatings and surfaces: If the panels are varnished, oiled or otherwise treated, it must be ensured that these coatings are food-safe.
3. Certifications: Products approved for contact with food usually carry the relevant certificates (e.g. FDA, LFGB or equivalent). Important: Standard solid wood panels from Nordpan are not specifically certified for direct contact with food. If you have an application where our panels come into contact with food, you should use a suitable protective coating (e.g. food-safe varnishes or oils). We recommend that you enquire directly with a specialist retailer about these protective coatings to ensure you get the right and safe solution for your application.

It is not strictly necessary, but under certain circumstances it may be advisable to store Nordpan single-layer panels with individual plastic wrapping to protect them from moisture, dust and damage. Plastic wrapping can help to preserve the surface and keep the panels in good condition during storage.
Here are a few tips for storage:
– The panels should be stored on a level, dry and well-ventilated surface.
– It is advisable not to place the panels directly on the floor, but on suitable supports or pallets to prevent moisture absorption.
– The packages should at least be covered on top to provide the best possible protection for the surface.
– During prolonged storage, it is a good idea to check the panels regularly for any build-up of moisture or damage.
– If you intend to use the panels at a later date, protected storage is definitely recommended to maintain their quality.
Nordpan offers a wide range of multi-layer panels. With regard to formaldehyde-free products, it is important to refer to the relevant product information. Nordpan uses low-formaldehyde adhesives in its multilayer panels to meet increasing health and environmental requirements. For example, the formaldehyde emissions from the three-layer panels range from 0.01 to 0.02 ppm, which is an extremely low figure. However, Nordpan does not currently offer a completely formaldehyde-free adhesive.
Nordpan’s three-layer and five-layer solid wood panels are designed to offer good stability and dimensional stability. However, warping and shrinkage can occur in solid wood panels, regardless of the number of layers, under certain conditions, particularly if they are exposed to fluctuations in humidity or are not stored correctly. Nordpan places great emphasis on quality and workmanship to minimise these risks. It is important to store the panels correctly before installation and to follow the recommended installation and care instructions.
Nordpan’s solid wood panels are 100% PEFC-certified, which stands for sustainable forest management. However, there is currently no FSC certification that is similar to the PEFC requirements.
Yes, Nordpan’s solid wood panels are 100% PEFC-certified. The PEFC seal stands for sustainable forest management and guarantees that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests. Nordpan attaches great importance to environmental sustainability and sustainable production, which is why PEFC certification is an important feature of its products.
Nordpan solid wood panels are manufactured from sustainable sources, with the wood sourced exclusively from European forests, specifically from countries such as Germany, Austria, Italy and Scandinavia. Nordpan attaches great importance to sustainable forestry and works exclusively with certified timber suppliers to ensure that the wood is harvested in an environmentally friendly and responsible manner.
Nordpan offers solid wood panels in a range of grades. However, the surface is always left in its natural state. A knot is not considered a defect here, provided it has grown in healthily. A knot-free grade cannot therefore be offered.
Nordpan three-layer panels are manufactured with longitudinal face slats, as this is the standard production method and ensures the panels’ stability and strength. A panel with transverse face slats cannot be supplied in the standard size.
The core layers of Nordpan’s multi-layer solid wood panels are carefully manufactured to ensure a standard of quality that does not adversely affect the panel’s load-bearing capacity. However, blue stain is not a factor in this process, which is why this discolouration will regularly be found in the core layer.
For Nordpan spruce multi-layer panels, the core layers in the higher quality grades are made from the same timber species as the face layers. In the lower quality grades, other timber species may be used. The aim is to produce a stable, durable panel in which the visible surfaces (face layers) are of particularly high quality, whilst the core layers are primarily functional.
Specifically, the situation at Nordpan is as follows:
Spruce: Core layer in spruce for grades 0/0 to C+/C+
Spruce: Core layer predominantly in spruce, though other timber species (primarily pine) may also be used in some cases for grades C+/C and C/C.
Larch: Core layer in larch for all grades in the nominal thicknesses 19 mm and 26 mm. In the nominal thicknesses 32 mm and 42 mm, a spruce core layer is used.
Pine: Centre layer in pine for all quality grades.
Douglas fir: Centre layer in pine for all quality grades.
Antique spruce (steamed spruce): Centre layer in natural spruce for all quality grades.
With Nordpan solid wood panels, the prevention of discolouration such as blue stain on the surface is guaranteed, particularly in the higher quality grades. Specifically, in the premium quality grades – Grade 0 and Grade A – Nordpan applies very strict sorting and processing standards, ensuring that no visible discolouration or blue stain occurs. In Grade B, isolated instances of discolouration may occur. In Grades C+ and C, discolouration is generally permitted.
For Nordpan solid wood panels, continuous joint gluing is standard in the higher quality grades. In the structural grades (non-visible areas), there may occasionally be open joints; however, this does not adversely affect the load-bearing capacity of the panel.
Nordpan can supply steamed spruce. It is also possible to have the panels brushed and/or chipped on request. However, painting, glazing, the application of fire retardants or other surface treatments are not available.
Nordpan solid wood panels are sanded on both sides using 120-grit sandpaper. (Exception: Grade C = 80-grit)
All Nordpan three-layer panels are available in usage class SWP/3 on request.
The greying of larch is a natural process caused by UV radiation, weathering and environmental factors. For larch used outdoors, greying is almost inevitable if the wood remains untreated. To prevent or delay greying, you can maintain the wood regularly. There are special wood preservatives available for this purpose, such as wood stains, oils or varnishes, which contain UV protection and shield the wood from the elements. These treatments help to preserve the original colour for longer and minimise greying. It is important to apply the products in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and to reapply them regularly to maintain the protection. If you wish to preserve the wood’s original colour, we recommend seeking advice from a specialist retailer or timber expert to find the right product for your application.
Nordpan’s three-layer and multi-layer solid wood panels are regularly used in façade construction. However, there are a number of recommendations for use that must be taken into account, which you can find in the downloads section at nordpan.com. It is also important to bear in mind that a Nordpan natural wood panel is a natural product and that wood, particularly when used outdoors, is subject to natural movement and may change over time.
In principle, we do not recommend using Nordpan multi-layer panels in sauna areas, as the high temperature fluctuations can lead to severe cracking. Some sauna builders nevertheless use the panels for this purpose and accept the problems that naturally arise. However, Nordpan cannot accept any liability for this.
At present, Nordpan does not offer any single-layer or multi-layer solid wood panels with tongue and groove.
Nordpan’s multi-layered solid wood panels are available in the usage classes SWP/1 (suitable for use in dry areas), SWP/2 (suitable for use in damp areas) and SWP/3 (suitable for outdoor use). This applies to all nominal thicknesses and quality grades, but only on request and subject to a specific minimum order quantity.
Nordpan is authorised to produce all three existing technical usage classes of solid wood panels. The differences are as follows:
SWP/1: Solid wood panel for use in dry areas: wood moisture content 8% (+/-2%). Gluing test using the cold water method.
SWP/2: Solid wood panel for use in damp areas: wood moisture content 10% (+/-3%). Gluing test using the boiling water method.
SWP/3: Solid wood panel for outdoor use: wood moisture content 12% (+/-3%). Gluing test using the alternating boiling method.

This is an important question when it comes to using timber panels for load-bearing purposes. Originally, three-ply and five-ply panels were designed primarily for indoor use, such as in furniture making or interior fit-outs.
However, these multi-layer softwood panels have since become extremely popular in timber construction, for example for roof structures or walls. All Nordpan multi-layer panels are suitable for load-bearing structures in outdoor applications or for load-bearing walls, as they possess the necessary structural properties and the relevant approval.
If you are planning a load-bearing application, I recommend that you check the technical data sheets for the relevant products carefully. In the downloads section of our website, you will find our Declaration of Performance, which sets out the product’s basic properties.
Nordpan manufactures its multi-layered solid wood panels using a unique wet-cutting technology. This process offers a number of significant advantages that save the fabricator and the end customer a great deal of trouble, time and money.
The key points are:
– Fewer defective branches: Thanks to the wet-cutting technique, the wood is less brittle when the lamellas are cut than when it is dry. As a result, the proportion of defective branches is significantly lower and the surface quality of the panels is improved, as they contain fewer natural branch knots.
– Fewer cracks in the knots: The lamella drying process significantly minimises star-shaped cracks in the knots as well as cracks in the knots at the edges of the lamellae.
– Resin pockets: Thanks to the lamella drying process, the resin flows out during the drying process, rather than during the pressing process as is usually the case.
– Moisture content: The moisture content of the face lamellae has been reduced to a tolerance of +/- 0.5 per cent. Instead of the deviation of up to +/- 3 per cent permitted by the standard, we achieve +/- 0.5 per cent. This small difference relieves tension in the panel and results in significantly greater stability.
– Uniform surface: By minimising tolerances in the production of the core and face layers, a flat, uniform surface is achieved.
– Sorting: State-of-the-art technologies (scanner sorting with pre-set parameters) ensure consistent quality at both plants (Olang and Strassen).
This results in the following benefits for the fitter:
– Less finishing work on surfaces and edges = significant cost savings.
– Complaints reduced to a minimum = savings in terms of time, hassle and problems with replacement deliveries.
– Improved quality in surface treatment with glazes and similar products, and time saved due to reduced effort.
Nordpan produces its natural timber panels from high-quality softwoods such as spruce, larch, pine and Douglas fir. It also offers steamed spruce and larch.
Nordpan’s five-layer solid wood panels are available in the usage classes SWP/1 (suitable for use in dry areas), SWP/2 (suitable for use in damp areas) and SWP/3 (suitable for outdoor use).
