Rubner Haus is pleased to announce its presence at the Milan Design Week 2025, from 7th until 17th April. Rubner Haus will be present at the Cre-Action exhibition event in Interni with a project in collaboration with AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi. The project is called “Catasta” and has the shape of a small small structure with a prominent slanted roof, reminiscent of an ancient temple. The design is made from planks of wood stacked in alternating directions, creating a disciplined composition defined by relationships of distance and void. The arrangement of the planks allows light to filter through, inviting visitors to look beyond and encouraging exploration. A zenithal beam of light cuts through the space via an optical cone, defined by the opening in the roof. Inside, a bird’s nest inhabits the void, with the soft chirping suggesting its presence, setting the stage for an intimate, delicate, and poetic experience.
A stack of wood is not a construction with a specific function, but rather “it is valued for what it evokes.” Stacking timber is an art form; one must select pieces that are homogeneous in both shape and size, then arrange them with great precision. Otherwise, the result is unstable and dangerous, and its presence is chaotic and disruptive within the fabric of the landscape. This, in turn, serves as a reminder of the designer’s role. When creating a new building, finding a balance between efficiency and both aesthetic and symbolic value is paramount. It is essential to meet functional and performance requirements, but equally important is identifying forms that can evolve with changes in use, technological advancements, and new lifestyles. This is why “Catasta” by AMDL CIRCLE and Rubner Haus is the perfect, sustainable balance between efficiency and aesthetic.
