New Sydney Fish Market

The development of the largest wooden roof in the Southern Hemisphere.

The new Sydney Fish Market is located in Blackwattle Bay, a bay in the inner city area of Sydney. Aiming to create a social hub for people from all over the world and to preserve the market atmosphere, the location of the existing fish market has been changed.

The new fish market consists of a series of open stalls covered by a canopy. The wave-shaped wooden roof, one of the most distinctive design elements, is not only aesthetic but also meets sustainability criteria:

  • The skylights illuminate the upper levels of the market while providing shade.
  • The integrated solar panels generate up to 5% of the daily energy consumption.
  • The roof area is designed to collect rainwater and prepare it for reuse.
  • The wooden roof is made up entirely of 584 laminated timber beams, and a total of 7 teams were involved in the planning. The planning period lasted a total of 15 months.

Technical Planning

September 2022 – December 2023

The planning phase of the wave-shaped wooden roof took approximately 15 months. A total of 7 teams were involved. For the 12,000 m² sales area, over 110 primary laminated timber beams with lengths ranging from 10 to approximately 33 meters were planned. About 100 secondary laminated timber beams with a length of around 14 meters and nearly 350 tertiary laminated timber beams with a length of just under 7 meters were also included.

Transport to Australia

September 2023 - December 2023

584 beams were loaded into the hull of a ship at the port of Monfalcone and then traveled 11,500 nautical miles to Australia. A detailed loading plan ensured that the beams were loaded in the correct order. This ensured that upon unloading in Sydney, the beams were available chronologically according to the assembly plan.

The Assembly

May 2024 – December 2024

The on-site assembly began on May 9, 2024, with the lifting of the first beam. Initially, cross-shaped supports with a four-way connection at the top of the support were positioned. Following this, the 110 primary laminated timber beams, ranging in length from 10 to approximately 33 meters, were mounted on these supports. In phase 3, the diagonal primary laminated timber beams with a hook connection were added.

The assembly sequence was designed to start with the northwestern part of the roof and then complete the roof in the east in step 4. The entire assembly process took about 8 months.
