Investing for better education

The Berlin Senate Department is building nine triple sports halls in modular construction in the city area. Based on a standardised load-bearing structure and the natural building material timber, we build low-cost and ecological school sports halls

With seven triple sports halls with 60 spectator seats and two triple sports halls with 199 spectator seats, the Berlin Senate Department is implementing the "Investments for Better Education" with a design by the architectural partnership scholl.balbach.walker. The halls score points in terms of health and environmental compatibility with a long service life.

Rubner Holzbau was commissioned by the general contractor Gustav Epple to carry out the timber construction work and the building envelope for the sports halls.

DGI Bauwerk is handling the entire planning cycle of the general planner and the execution of the general contractor in accordance with the Senate Department's guidelines, including file management, project mapping in the accounting system, reporting and maintenance of the virtual project room, in project control following the monitoring of the competition procedure.

The innovative timber construction method requires a particularly high degree of deadline assurance in the realisation and simultaneous coordination of the nine locations, which have very different development situations. Prefabrication and delivery as well as installation of the timber construction elements are closely timed in a fixed sequence at the respective construction sites.

Sporting renewal throughout the city

Rubner Holzbau Augsburg, with Gustav Epple as general contractor, is realising seven triple sports halls with 60 and two triple sports halls with 199 spectator seats. The first hall at the Lily-Braun-Gymnasium in Spandau has already been inaugurated.

Meanwhile, two other halls are currently in the process of completion and two are about to be completed. The timber construction assembly has already been completed.

For the sixth hall, assembly of the glulam structure with a span of almost 26 m will begin at the end of June 2021. Hall number 7 is in the shell stage, and the timber will be delivered to the construction site at the beginning of September.

Thanks to our high degree of prefabrication and an almost perfectly coordinated, cross-trade schedule, we are able to execute and complete the timber engineering construction, including the post-and-beam façades, in just eleven weeks.
