Rubner Holzbau pavilion "KA300" - core element of the Karlsruhe festival summer

The festival summer started - Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck visits pavillon.
Rubner Holzbau Augsburg builds Festival pavilion for the 300th anniversary of the city of Karlsruhe out of 170 glulam beams.
Dynamic Rod Structure: Rubner Holzbau responsible for the construction of the Karlsruhe Jubilee Pavilion "KA300"

In the run-up to the 300th anniversary celebration of the city of Karlsruhe, which will be celebrated in the year 2015, the bidding consortium, composed of the company Rubner Holzbau in Augsburg and the Berlin based architectural office J. Mayer H. and Partner, architects, was awarded the contract for the design and construction of a temporary Jubilee Pavilion in the palace garden (Schlossgarten).
The transparent construction of the „Pavilion KA300“ is composed of 170 light-grey, slightly inclined and horizontal glulam rods (including floor and platforms 338 m³). These rods create a spatial line field, which – with its forward and progressive modernity – purposefully and deliberately contrasts with the historic baroque palace. The structure may be provided with translucent membranes that are inserted in between the rods and which may serve as weather protection.

The pavilion with a surface area of some 1,000 m² and a height of up to 16.5 m is composed of the ground floor, including function hall (250 seats or 600 standing places), a stage and cafeteria as well as an exposition floor and two viewing platforms. During the city festival, which will take place from June 17 until September 27, 2015, the pavilion serves as central meeting point and is used for numerous events.

The pavilion was assembled during five months by the company Rubner Holzbau, who will also be responsible for the removal and recycling of the construction’s timber and steel elements once the anniversary festivities have been concluded.
